The relaxation response is a physical state of deep rest that channels stress and decreases heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing pace. As a result, the muscles become relaxed and circulation improves. The progressive relaxation process allows individuals more in tune with personal needs and understands the importance of self-maintenance.
- The mind body medicine technique is adapted from Herbert Benson, MD. He found a mechanism to counterbalance the stress response. At the Benson-Henry Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital he realized through research models that physical health is shaped by reflections, feelings, and can equally be formed by physical symptoms. Mindfulness meditation is adopted from Jon Kabat Zinn, Ph.D. He is the founding Executive Director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He was also a Professor of Medicine at Emeritus and a director of a Stress Reduction Clinic at the Medical School. Jon Kabat Zinn, Ph.D. has published numerous books for the public on mindfulness meditation which has been translated into over 30 languages. His research focuses on mind/body interactions for healing, clinical applications of mindfulness mediation training, and stress in various corporate settings as well as other work environments.
